Kokee Road from Kekaha, closed on Sunday

KEKAHA — Kokee Road, from the Kekaha Mini-mart to the intersection with Waimea Canyon Drive, will be closed to all vehicles from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, advised leaders of the Pedal to the Meadow uphill bicycle climb.

Starting at 8 a.m., motorists using Kokee Road from the intersection on Waimea Canyon Drive up to the Kokee Lodge and Museum should watch for bicycles and use extreme care when passing bicyclists.

“While cyclists must obey all rules of the road, they will be focused on racing, may move quickly to avoid bad potholes or debris, and may be in small groups,” officials said.

They urge motorists to be patient and avoid “leap-frogging,” especially on the curvy mountain road with numerous blind curves.

The race officially ends at 11 a.m., but some riders may still be on the course or riding back down.

This is the 15th running of Pedal to the Meadow, in which bicyclists spin from sea-level Kekaha to the Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Kokee State Park.
