For 19 years, Harvey Maeda and his Kauai Classic Cars ohana have been holding the “Dad style” car show, and the appeal of classic cars, hot rods and fast cars and their owners is far from gone.
Was Kamehameha I a father, Maeda wanted to know. Kamehameha I, according to online sources, is father to seven children, including Kamehameha III, Kamehameha II, Kina‘u, Kamamalu, Nahienaena, Pauli Kaoieoku, and Kauwa Pailia.
“There will be lots of time to come visit the cars and talk to the owners once The King’s Parade and Ho‘olaule‘a that starts at 9 a.m. is done,” Maeda said. “We’re here until 2 p.m.”
The Dad’s Day Car Show 2025, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, is just one of several dad celebration events that fill the weekend at the Kukui Grove Center.
Deja Vu Surf Hawaii breaks out its inventory of tents for the sidewalk sale that blossoms outside its retail doors on Friday and Saturday. The tents will be stocked with store markdowns and special deals to fill any Dad’s Day gift list.
Additionally, on Sunday, Deja Vu Surf Hawaii will be participating in a fashion show as part of the Miss Kauai Filipina cultural event.
The cultural event coordinated by the Miss Kauai Filipina Scholarship Pageant Committee will give a preview of the pageant that takes place on June 21 at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall, starting at 7 p.m., and presented by the Kauai Filipino Community Council with Nancy Apalla as the organization’s president.
Tickets for the pageant will be available from any of the three contestants for this year’s Miss Kauai Filipina crown as well as from Aleyah Yano, the reigning 2024 Miss Kauai Filipina. Ticket sales from the contestants are important because that is one of the criteria the contestants are judged on during the pageant.
The contestants, in addition to meeting and greeting the public, will be modeling the Deja Vu Surf Hawaii fashions.
The Bailes de Jose Filipino dance troupe, inspired and motivated by the late Jose Bulatao, will feature the traditional Filipino costuming in the group’s presentation of ethnic dance.
One of the Filipinos, Rick Rasay is part of the Dad’s Day car show when he sets up his DJ tent, and will be joined by Frank Cruz of Cruz Control in the Kukui Grove parking lot near Ross Dress for Less.
Inside the shopping center on Saturday, Wrongway Jackson keeps the excitement stoked from 1 p.m.
On Sunday, wake up to Father’s Day Jazz from 11:30 a.m. until the Miss Kauai Filipina pageant folks bring on the cultural festival.
