Loaves and Fishes food distribution Wednesday

LIHU‘E — You needed to be here, earlier in the morning, said Saint Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church volunteer Yvonne Johnson on Monday in the church’s parking lot.

“Volunteer Kento Caya and myself do this on every Monday before Loaves and Fishes ministry,” Johnson said. “We pick up the food we need for the Wednesday distribution, bring it back to the church where it gets put into storage, refrigerators, and even the freezer.”

Johnson said another group of volunteers come to the church on Tuesday to create the food packages that will be distributed on the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Vidinha Stadium parking lot.

Led by Carla Baker, the Loaves and Fishes Outreach Ministry distributes food packages on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 9 to 10 a.m. at the stadium’s parking lot.

“There’re quite a few people that need food,” Johnson said. “They usually start lining up from about 8 a.m., but we don’t distribute anything until 9 a.m. Right now, there’re about 85 families that participate.”

She said the food packages are set by the church leaders. On Wednesday, the package includes a quantity of canned food, eggs, fresh carrots and a loaf of bread.

During the distribution on the third Wednesday, the Saint Michael’s group is joined by Michelle Panoke of the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i, who brings along kupuna boxes.
