Medical marijuana dispensary opens in Waimea

A new medical marijuana dispensary opened for business in Waimea on Monday, bringing the total number of licensed dispensaries on the Big Island to five.

Hawaiian Ethos, the first company on the island to be authorized to sell marijuana products by the state Department of Health, was granted its notice to proceed on Monday by the DOH.

The new Waimea location is Hawaiian Ethos’ second dispensary; its first location opened in Kailua-Kona last June.

The remaining three Big Island dispensaries are operated by Big Island Grown Dispensaries, with sites in Hilo, Waimea and Kailua-Kona.

According to the DOH, there were approximately 8,018 registered medical marijuana patients on the Big Island, with more than 500 registered caregivers. The primary reported qualifying condition for patients is severe pain.

With the opening of the new Waimea dispensary, there are now 13 dispensaries operating throughout the state, with five locations on Oahu, two on Maui and one on Kauai.
