Menehune cap volleyball season with 2nd-place finish at state tourney

The Waimea High School volleyball concluded another season of Kauai Interscholastic Federation volleyball.

All season, the Menehune were challenged by KIF teams, including Island, Kauai, and Kappa, and finished the season with a perfect 11-0 record.

“Like I’ve been telling them, our team played with a lot of hustle and heart, and they came back from reverse sweeps all season in the KIF,” Menehune’s coach Brandi Hori-Moises told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The Menehune, who finished second in the at the New City Nissan Girls Division II volleyball championship after falling to Damien in three games 25-19, 25-11, 25-14 Saturday afternoon concluded all high school-sanctioned volleyball for the fall.

“We got to see them a lot in the preseason, and we could have matched up a whole better,” Brandi-Hori Moises said.

Hori-Moises, who will lose five seniors off her roster headed into the 2019-2020 season, is looking forward to next season.

“There is always next year, and our team put a fight, and we wish we did a whole lot better,” Hori-Moises told the Star-Advertiser. “Our team has five seniors, and we have a young team and still have a lot of talent that is coming back, and I think we will be back.”

The state tournament was an off-island competition in Honolulu, but there was plenty of support from the island of Kauai, Hori-Moises said.

The Menehunes defeated two off-island teams to qualify for the state championship against Damien.

“I am so proud of our team, and there was so much support, and they’ve been with us since the beginning,” Hori-Moises told the Star-Advertiser.
