Menehune lead KIF regatta

NAWILIWILI — Waimea High School paddling teams took two of the three divisions, Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation paddling regatta that was touted as a make up race for a previously-canceled event at the Nawiliwili Harbor. The regatta was a varsity division only event.

The Menehune teams captured the varsity Boys and varsity Mixed division races. The Kauai High School varsity girls captured its division race.

Kauai girls set the pace in the preliminaries, the Raider ladies crossing the line on a 4-mile time of 4 minutes, 34.11 seconds ahead of the Kapaa team’s 4:40.33 run. The Raiders continued in the finals to claim the day’s run on a 4:37.26 improved time over Kapaa’s 4:43.34.

Waimea boys claimed their Boys division with a solid 4:07.38, challenged by Kapaa crossing second in the finals at 4:13.71, and Kauai at 4:18.08.

Island School paddlers made its appearance at the regatta but failed to advance to the finals after its A team, stroking to a 4:20.19 finish in the preliminaries, was ousted by the Kapaa team who clocked a 4:12.24 run.

The Voyager B team was also taken out in the third heat of the preliminaries after finishing third with a 4:45.32 run. Waimea’s B team finished second in the third heat with a 4:21.94 showing below Kapaa’s B team that took the heat on a 4:19.20 run.

Island School’s Mixed team also failed to advance to the finals after being ousted by the Kauai A team who captured the second heat with a 4:30.98 finish to the Voyagers’ 4:42.59.

The Menehune Mixed team took the finals by edging out Kapaa on a 4:25.46 run, just three ticks ahead of the challenging Warriors who crossed on 4:28.96. Kauai’s team rounded out the leaderboard on 4:42.46. The next KIF regatta, the KIF championships, is scheduled for Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
