More seedlings available Saturday

‘ELE‘ELE — ‘Ele‘ele Elementary School student Carmila Udarbe must really have a green thumb.

Two weekends ago, Udarbe and her team of mentors, Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes and Roy Miyashiro, hosted a seedling distribution because the seedlings were ready and could not wait to be sent out.

Saturday, the Udarbe team will be hosting another seedling distribution starting at 8 a.m. near the Gather Federal Credit Union entrance at the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center. The distribution normally runs until around noon, but supplies are exhausted by then.

People interested in getting seedlings for planting should go early for the best selection or availability. Once supplies are gone, the event closes.

Vegetable seedlings available include the University of Hawai‘i Manoa lettuce, Anuenue lettuce, Hirayama Kai Choi, or mustard cabbage, solo papaya, green long sweet peppers, zucchini, Japanese cucumber, Hawaiian hot chili pepper, purple eggplant, long Filipino beans, cherry tomatoes, and medium-sized bittermelon.

Proceeds from Udarbe’s project of starting seedlings go back toward ensuring future plantings. Any surplus is put into her college fund.
