Most-polluted test site in April is Moloa‘a Stream

LIHU‘E — The Blue Water Task Force has released its April test results.

The task force is operated by the Kaua‘i chapter of the nonprofit Surfrider Foundation. Each month, the group tests water samples collected from local rivers, streams and surf breaks for fecal-indicating enterococcus bacteria.

Enterococci bacteria come from warm-blooded animals, like humans, cattle, pigs, dogs, cats, rats and birds. Cesspool leakage into the groundwater and thus into the streams is a likely cause of some of the sites’ contamination, the task force stated in a press release.

This month, the task force noted that it had been raining the night before and during sampling.
