A 31-year old Mountain View woman facing numerous drug and firearms charges after allegedly attempting to flee from police Nov. 11 in Fern Acres subdivision remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center, unable to post $144,000 bail.
Juanita P. Grammer is charged with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm on a public roadway, illegally carrying a firearm and ammunition, altering the identification marks of a firearm, four counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, resisting an order to stop, and driving without a license and insurance.
She has a preliminary hearing set for 2 p.m. Dec. 1 in Hilo District Court.
According to court documents filed by police, a Puna patrol officer spotted an older silver Honda Accord sedan heading east on Plumeria Street at about 4 p.m. with “blackout-style tint on the side windows.” A check reportedly showed the car’s registration and safety sticker were expired.
When the officer attempted to stop the car, the driver, later identified as Grammer, attempted to flee, documents state. The driver reportedly made a hard right onto Rose Street, an unpaved roadway, and lost control of the car, sliding into a dense clump of vegetation.
Documents state the officer couldn’t see into the car because of the tinted windows and foliage covering the front windshield, but could smell the engine overheating and rubber burning as Grammer continually shifted between drive and reverse in an attempt to escape.
When Grammer, who was alone in the car, didn’t comply with an order to exit the car with hands up, the officer broke the front driver side window with a baton. The officer then put the car’s transmission in park, took the keys out of the ignition, pulled Grammer out of the car and arrested her, according to documents.
Police say Grammer was alone in the car.
A search of the car allegedly turned up a loaded pistol, ammunition, a glass smoking pipe with residue, syringes containing a brown liquid which tested positive for methamphetamine, two silicone containers containing a brown residue which tested positive for heroin, and zip packs with residue which tested positive for methamphetamine.
Grammer has five felony convictions. When she was arrested Nov. 11, she was on probation for auto theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of terroristic threatening. She also has a conviction for third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug.
