Multiple agencies contain airport fire

LIHU‘E — Firefighters contained a 100-acre brushfire that broke out near the makai side of Lihu‘e Airport on Monday afternoon.

One firefighter was injured and was treated at and released from Wilcox Medical Center.

The fire broke out at around 2:30 p.m. near Ninini Point, along the makai side of the Lihu‘e Airport.

Kaua‘i Fire Department Firefighters from the Lihu‘e, Kapa‘a, Kalaheo and Hanapepe fire stations, the two county emergency helicopters, Lihu‘e rescue personnel, the KFD battalion chief, county Department of Public Works Roads Division workers, Kaua‘i Police Department and Lihu‘e Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting personnel responded.

Quick action by firefighters ensured that the blaze did not reach nearby structures before it could be contained at 7:45 p.m., according to a county press release.

After firefighters from the county and state battled the fire for nearly six hours, crews from the DPW Roads Division utilized a bulldozer to cut a fire break to keep the fire from spreading to airport structures.

KFD personnel continued to monitor hot spots in the area Tuesday, and officials with the County Housing Agency will reach out to houseless individuals in the area who may need assistance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
