Timi Gilliom, captain and builder of the voyaging canoe Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani, awoke from a midday nap in Hui O Wa’a Kaulua’s Front Street shop on Aug. 8, 2023, to the sound of a homeless man rattling his gate — and the smell of smoke from the devastating Lahaina wildfire.
