No temporary night closure of Kailua Pier, yet

A temporary night-time closure of the Kailua Pier will not go into effect this weekend.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation continues to assess the proposed closure from 10 p.m.-5 a.m. daily, a spokesperson confirmed Friday. That means the closure will not be implemented today as was planned when the division announced the proposal in April.

The closure was floated as a means to address homelessness and illegal activities taking place at the pier. During the closed hours, no member of the public would have been permitted access on the pier. Violators would have be subject to warnings, citations and/or arrest for trespass on state land.

The proposal followed increased violations of Hawaii Revised Statutes and Administrative Rules, including consumption of alcoholic beverages, smoking, storage of personal items, camping, sleeping and littering.
