North Shore Lions accepting scholarship applications

HANALEI — The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions Club is currently accepting applications for its 2023 annual scholarship program that awards scholarships to deserving North Shore students to support and encourage continuing education.

Applications are accepted from current high school seniors scheduled to graduate at the end of the school year 2023. Individuals who have previously received scholarships are encouraged to submit applications if they are continuing their studies.

The Lions Club also encourages students who are attending qualified trade schools to submit applications.

Eligible students must attend full time, an institution of higher learning that includes college or trade schools; have a Grade Point Average of 2.0, or higher; and must live on Kaua‘i’s North Shore that includes the area between Moloa‘a and Ha‘ena.

Applications can be obtained at the Kapa‘a High School counselor’s office, the Island School financial aid office, the Kaua‘i Christian Academy principal’s office, the Kaua‘i Community College financial aid office, or online at www.kauainorthshorelions.org.

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic performance, leadership, community involvement, and volunteerism. All applications, including the required documentation listed on the application must be postmarked by April 15.

Last year, the Lions Club awarded more than $60,000 to help students with educational expenses.

“We are again particularly grateful for the kind generosity of the Steve and Janine Hunt Family Foundation for their $20,000 donation to the Lion’s Club scholarship fund,” said John Gordon of the North Shore Lions Scholarship Program. “Additionally, a big Mahalo to both the Aloha Roofing Company, and Russ Boyer for their respective donations.”

For more than 30 years, the Lions Club has awarded scholarships to deserving students of Kaua‘i’s North Shore with funds derived from donations and the annual scholarship golf tournament.

The North Shore Lions Club was founded in 1982 to serve Kaua‘i’s North Shore communities and the International Lions’ focus on helping those with vision and hearing impairments. Supporting the Lions motto of “We serve,” the North Shore Lions Club hosts numerous community service projects, and one of the club’s rewarding activities has been helping local students pay for college through its annual scholarship program.
