Thomas E. Swenarton, 53, of Pahoa died Sept. 11 at home. Born in Waterford, Conn., he was a third-generation scientist who held various positions at Moss Landing Marine Laboratory, National Marine Fisheries Service, Connecticut Division of Marine Fisheries, and The Nature Conservancy, was a research vessel captain and scientific diver for the University of Hawaii and member of Western Pacific Fishery Management Council Advisory Panel, co-authored research on the connection between fish ciguatoxins and the population decline of Hawaiian monk seals.
