Dolores (Dee) Sarmento
Dolores (Dee) Sarmento, 90, of Lawai and Kalaheo, passed away on June 13, 2025, at home. She was born in Oakland, California, on Aug. 11, 1934, and worked as a Key Punch Operator for many years before becoming a Computer Librarian with Clorox Company in Oakland, California.
She was preceded in passing by her husband Alfred Correa Sarmento of Lawai, Kauai, parents Peter and Caroline Abila, son Thomas L. Miller (Rebecca Kane) of Riverbank, California, siblings John Abila, Mary “Mimi” Elizabeth Abila, Carol Ann (Turley), Patricia (Kulp), Peter Abila and Richard Abila.
Dolores is survived by her children John M. (KC Egan) Miller of Alameda, California, Alfred P. (Darline Rita) Sarmento of Kekaha, Kauai, Gregory S. (Jo Quinn) Sarmento of Custer, South Dakota, sister Barbara Cota of Pleasanton, California, nieces Linda Marie Landers of Gladstone, Missouri and Valerie Truce (Roger) of Reno, Nevada and many others. Grandchildren Regina M. Miller (Gary Clark) of Livermore, California, Fiona Miller of Los Angeles, California, Christina Miller and Ricky Miller of Riverbank, California, Dwight and Sandra Miller of Albarraque, Portugal, David Sarmento and Kelly Sarmento of San Lorenzo, California, and many great-grandchildren.
The family asks for donations to The Alzheimer’s Association, Hawaii Chapter in lieu of flowers.
A celebration of life will be held at The Church at Koloa, AOG, on Tuesday, July 29, at 10 a.m. With internment to follow at The Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m.

Bernard Raymond ‘Benny Ray’ Perreira
Bernard Raymond “Benny Ray” Perreira, 84, of Kalaheo, passed away on June 16, 2025, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was born in Makaweli, Hawaii, on Aug. 20, 1940, and was a heavy equipment operator in the Operators Union Local 3.
He was preceded in passing by his parents Frank and Helen Perreira, siblings Joseph “Sonny” Perreira, Frank “Butch” Perreira, Muriel Perreira and granddaughter Tessie Pua Hoku Yolanda Ana.
Bernard is survived by his wife Cecilia M. Perreira, children Shane (Velene McGee) Perreira, Healani (Keith) Ana, Kuulei (Danny) Akau, Kalei (Lenard) Alejandro, Noe (Marrisha) Perreira-Valdez, sister Diana Medeiros, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at Holy Cross Church on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. with service to follow.

Demetrio Delos Reyes Asuncion
Demetrio Delos Reyes Asuncion passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on June 6, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on Nov. 27, 1939, in the Philippines. He was a field irrigation technician for Lihue Plantation.
He is survived by wife Pacita Asuncion of Kauai, sons Roger Asuncion of California, Rodelio Asuncion (Nelia Melchor) of Kauai, Isaac Asuncion (Fressie Munoz) of Kauai, Art Asuncion (Rowena Agni) of Nevada, daughters Judith Layaoen of Kauai, Emy (Roland) Tomas of Kauai, Connie (Virgilio) Balisacan of Kauai, daughter-in-law Mary Ann Sales, 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sisters Salvadora (Josue) Galves of Kauai, Bernarda Deocares of Nevada, numerous nieces, nephew and cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Garden Island Mortuary. Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m., with a celebration of life service at 11 a.m. The burial will be held at Kauai Memorial Gardens at 12 p.m.

Julie Lopez
Julie Lopez, of Makaweli, passed away on June 9, 1936, in Lihue at the age of 88. She was born on June 25, 1936, in Puhi. She was retired.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bonifacio Lopez, grandson Keoni Cummings Jr., son-in-law Walter Silva, parents Cicelio and Hertrodus Nadarisay, brothers Raymond Villatora, Victor Villatora, Frank Nadarisay, Bernardo Nadarisay, sisters Gloria Caberto and Mercy Inez.
She is survived by her sons Alton (Raenette) Lopez of Kekaha, Mark Lopez of Makaweli, Gary (Elsa) Lopez of Makaweli, Jon (Shannon) Lopez of Koloa, daughters Charlene (Ugi) Adric of Lihue, Jasmine Lopez-Silva of Makaweli, 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, brothers Tony (Candace) Nadarisay of Lihue, Benny (Marina) Villatora of Puhi, sisters Diane Vierra of Honolulu, Florencia “Dor” Alviar of Puhi, Dolores “Nor” Alimboyoguen of Tracy, California, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Visitation from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a celebration of life. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Wendall ‘Pope’ Navales
Wendall “Pope” Navales, 68, passed away on July 4, 2025, in Lawai, Hawaii. He was born on Nov. 9, 1956, in Lihue, Hawaii. He was a retired truck driver for Grace Pacific.
He was preceded in death by his parents Loretto and Concepcion Navales and brother Les Navales.
He is survived by his daughter Wailana (Kyle) Blackstad, grandchildren Kira, Kahanu, Wehilani, brother Michael (Joan) Navales, sisters Charlene (Chris) Gammerino and Loretta Navales.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the service at 10 a.m.

Jane Namie Sheldon
Jane Namie Sheldon, of Wailua Houselots, passed away on June 10, 2025, at Garden Island Health Care & Nursing at the age of 94. She was born on Nov. 16, 1930, in Lihue. She was a retired chief warehouse clerk for Hawaiian Telephone Company, GTE Hawaiian Tel, and Verizon.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Sheldon, father Togo Shiraishi, mother Harumi Nakaya, brother James Nakaya and sister Katherine Maxberry.
She is survived by her sons Jeffrey Kunane (Kyong) Sheldon of Honolulu, Kaiwa (Tammy) Sheldon of Kalaheo, daughters Char (Robin) Sanchez of Wailua Homesteads, Lynn Sheldon-Isobe of Wailua Houselots, grandchildren Sherri Sanchez Holcomb, Kealii Sanchez, Shanilynn Kreunen, Malia Sheldon, Ka‘iulani Sheldon, Kunane Isobe, great-grandchildren Bryant Holcomb, Brynna Kreunen, Nainoa Kreunen, Makana Kreunen, Kahekilinui Sheldon and sister Diane Mori of Honolulu.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Viewing from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by the service officiated by Pastor Tom Iannucci. Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

John J. Arzadon
John J. Arzadon, of Kapaa, passed away on Jan. 14, 2025, at the age of 96, at Castle Hospital on Oahu. He served in the Korean War and founded Arzadon Engineering & Construction.
He was preceded in death by his parents Braulio and Eusebia Valera Arzadon, sister Lucia Arzadon (Valentine), Rosalina Arzadon, Julie Arzadon and brother Tony Arzadon.
He is survived by his stepmother Easter Arzadon, sisters Pacita Arzadon (Jimenez), Karen Arzadon, brothers David Arzadon, Stuart Arzadon, sons Brian Arzadon, Craig Arzadon, daughters Myra Arzadon, April Arzadon, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Lihue Christian Church from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial services will be held privately at a later date.
Yasu Fernandes
Yasu Fernandes, 93, of Keapana Valley, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2025. She was born in Itoman, Okinawa, on Sept. 25, 1931.
Yasu grew up in Okinawa, where she experienced and survived the most horrendous war that left her and her brothers orphaned. She married the late Antone J. Fernandes of Kalaheo, Kauai, (who was an electrician for the Army) and worked as a custodian at KCC for over 15 years. She spent her retirement tending to her plants, her flower garden and going for walks with friends. Yasu’s greatest joy came from being with family. Holidays were exciting when she would serve Ozoni and her famous shrimp and vegetable tempura! She was a person of deep faith and love in our Lord Jesus Christ; whose arms she flew into when she left this earth.
She was preceded in passing by her husband Antone J. Fernandes, mother Yushi Tamashiro, father Jiro Uehara, sister Fusako Uehara, brothers Chiyokichi Uehara, Ichiro Uehara, Yasuo Uehara and Yoshiro Uehara.
Yasu is survived by her daughter June Muñoz, son Anthony (Belma) Fernandes, brother Takashi Uehara, grandchildren Leela (Billy) Parbo, Sachi (DJ) Muñoz, and Makana (Kacey) Muñoz, great-grandchildren Kainoa Muñoz, Dione (Brison) Maglinti, Kailee (Ezra) Maglinti, Kamalei Parbo, Anela Parbo, Selah Muñoz Kuwamura, Lilia Muñoz Kuwamura, Mehana Muñoz Kuwamura, and Kainalu Muñoz, and great-great-grandchildren Kailea Estrella, Kalalea Estrella, and Xaden Nacapuy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Lihue Neighborhood Center on Nov. 15, 2025, at 10 a.m.
