‘Ohana invited to outdoor ‘Grinch’ screening Friday

LIHU‘E — Visitors to Kalena Park on Rice Street in Lihu‘e will step into Whoville on Friday, when “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is screened for free at sunset.

Organizers Get Fit Kaua‘i, Kupua‘a Kaua‘i and the Rice Street Business Association are behind the outdoor community event open to all ages, from keiki to kupuna.

“We want to share some holiday spirit with our friends, family and our entire community,” RSBA Consultant Lexi Jones said.

Friday’s “Grinch” film is director Ron Howard’s 2000 take on the classic Dr. Seuss story, starring Jim Carrey as the infamous, green and cantankerous resident of Mount Crumpit.

Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin and Molly Shannon feature in supporting roles.

The screening will be limited to 100 attendees. Organizers have advised those interested to register online in advance, at kalenaparkmovienight.eventbrite.com, to secure their spot.

On-site registration will not be supported.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and snacks, but no alcoholic beverages or tobacco products.

Organizers also require attendees to wear face masks when entering the event, and to check in at a reception table near the park’s aloha sign, to receive a wristband and seating-area designation.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is slated to begin screening at 6:15 p.m., just after sunset.

Rain dates are Saturday, Dec. 18 or Sunday, Dec. 19.

Registered attendees will be notified of any date changes.

Jones said more outdoor-movie screenings could come to Kalena Park in 2022, depending on county COVID-19 guidelines, although no formal plans have been made.

“It’s hard to say if it will move into the New Year,” she said. “But the energy (is there).”

However, there is no question more programming is coming to the spot located on the corner of Rice and Kalena streets.

“We’re excited to see what 2022 has in store for all the fun activities at Kalena Park,” Jones said.
