OSB: Baby shark sighting, large pond at Lydgate closed

WAILUA — Kaua‘i Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising no swimming in the large pond at Lydgate Park until further notice due to reports of a baby shark that is unable to swim out to sea.

On Tuesday, officials were notified that a shark, approximately 2 feet long, was seen swimming in the large pond at Lydgate Park.

Officials with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources are working on a plan to safely capture and relocate the shark back into the ocean. Until then, beach-goers are asked to follow all posted warning signs and advisories.

For current updates about ocean conditions and ocean safety, speak to a county lifeguard at any lifeguard station or call OSB at 808-241-4984.
