Parolee faces drug, firearms charges

A 43-year-old Hilo man was charged with a slew of drug- and firearms-related charges after police allegedly found him slumped over the steering wheel of a car, apparently asleep, in the left-turn lane on Kanoelehua Avenue onto Kekuanaoa Street toward Hilo International Airport on Jan. 22.

Police say the white Nissan sedan’s motor was running, but the driver, Cory George Young, couldn’t provide registration or insurance for the car and his driver’s license had been revoked.

Officers say they saw a firearm in the car, and a search of the car turned up a loaded .22 calibur handgun, more than 2.17 pounds of methamphetamine, 21.4 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Young was charged with five firearms offenses plus first- and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, attempted first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, driving without a license and violating parole.

A preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Feb. 6 in Hilo District Court and Young remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $254,000 bail.
