Pedestrian critical after Kapa‘a crash

KAPA‘A — A pedestrian remains in critical condition at Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu after he was struck by a vehicle in a marked crosswalk on Kuhio Highway in Kapa‘a Friday evening.

The 69-year-old male sustained serious injuries, was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, then transferred to Queen’s Medical Center in O‘ahu.

According to a preliminary report, at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday, the 26-year-old male driver of a Toyota multi-purpose vehicle traveling southbound on Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of Niu Street struck the man, who was attempting to cross the highway in a marked crosswalk.

Speed does not appear to be a factor. However, toxicology reports are pending to determine if there was any impairment on the driver’s part.

The highway was closed for two hours for the police investigation. Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact officer Shawn Hanna of the Kaua‘i Police Department Traffic Safety Section at 241-1615.
