During the week of April 22-28, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and none were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, five; Puna, two; North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 373 DUI arrests compared to 371 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.54%. There have been 308 major accidents so far this year compared to 426 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.7%.
To date, there have been six official traffic fatalities compared to eight for the same time last year, a decrease of 25%. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
