During the week of Nov. 23-29, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, five; Puna, four; and South Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 908 DUI arrests compared to 983 during the same period last year a decrease of 7.6 percent.
There have been 708 major accidents so far this year compared to 900 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.3 percent.
To date, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared to 23 fatalities for the same time last year.
This represents a decrease of 34.8 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
