Police arrest 21 motorists for DUI

During the week of April 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. None were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The number of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, seven; and Puna, five.

So far this year, there have been 357 DUI arrests compared to 345 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.5 percent.

There have been 287 major accidents so far this year compared to 402 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28.6 percent.

To date, there have been six official traffic fatalities compared to eight during the same time last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
