Police arrest 24 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 25-March 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, six; Puna, two; North Hilo, South Kohala and Ka‘u, one each.

So far this year, there have been 206 DUI arrests compared to 176 during the same period last year, an increase of 17 percent.

There have been 164 major accidents so far this year compared to 212 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.6 percent.

To date, there have been two official traffic fatalities, compared to five fatalities at the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 60 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
