Police arrest 25 drivers for DUI

During the week of June 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo and Puna, eight each; Kona, seven; and South Kohala, two.

There were other charges stemming from the DUI arrests: three for driving while license suspended; three for driving without a llicense; one for marijuana possession; and five for driving without insurance.

In addition, there were 23 arrests for other moving and/or regulatory violations.

So far this year, there have been 516 DUI arrests compared to 510 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.2 percent.

There have been 399 major accidents so far this year compared to 585 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31.8 percent.

To date, there have been 11 official fatalities, compared to 15 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 26.7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
