Police arrest 25 for DUI

During the week of March 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for DUI.

Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 11; Kona, six; Puna, five; Hamakua, Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 267 DUI arrests compared to 228 during the same period last year, an increase of 17.1 percent.

There have been 205 major accidents so far this year compared to 265 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.6 percent.

To date, there have been three official traffic fatalities this year, compared to seven fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of and 57.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
