Police ID 2 men killed in January traffic crashes

Police released the identities of two men killed in separate traffic collisions last month in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

A man killed Jan. 9, when the Jeep he was driving crossed the center line on Makuu Drive at 2nd Avenue, hit a utility pole and ejected him, was identified as 55-year-old Richard Valdez of Granite Bay, Calif.

And a motorcyclist killed Jan. 15, when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the corner of Makuu Drive and 24th Avenue and broadsided a pickup truck, was identified as 32-year-old Ryan Starett of Keaau.

Traffic investigators are awaiting toxicology results for both incidents to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the crashes.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is still seeking witnesses or anyone with information about either crash. Those with information are asked to call the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2339 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
