Police: Weekend affray leads to stabbings, arrest

A 38-year-old Hilo man was arrested after a late-night stabbing Saturday in Hilo.

According to police, officers responded shortly after 10:45 p.m. to the old Pu‘ueo Poi Factory on Kekuanaoa Street on the report of an active affray and multiple stabbing victims. Arriving officers saw a man whom witnesses said was the stabber running from the building.

Police later arrested the man, Johan Welson, on suspicion of second-degree assault. He has since been released from police custody pending further investigation.

A 40-year-old man and his 18-year-old and 14-year-old sons were taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The 18-year-old was treated and released. The father and the 14-year-old son were both admitted to the hospital, but have since been discharged.

According to police, the incident started when the 40-year-old man and his two sons went to the apartment complex to confront Welson. A physical altercation ensued within Welson’s apartment, which resulted in Welson being assaulted and the three males being stabbed.
