Pop Warner national All-Americans named

LIHU‘E — Six Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League participants made the national Second Team All-American team, and three participants were named Honorable Mention, announced Blaine Agena, the KPWFL commissioner and scholastic coordinator Thursday afternoon.

Nicholas Gandeza of the Lihu‘e Raiders, Brennen Fernandez of the Kekaha Titans, Kyren Toma, also of the Kekaha Titans, Duke Alderete-Labuguen of the Hanapepe Colts, Tristan Raposas of the Kekaha Titans, and Nia Pablo of the Hanapepe Colts were recipients of the national All-American Honors by maintaining a 96% or higher grade point average and participating in extracurricular and honors activities.

The six were named Second Team All-Americans.

Honorable mentions were presented to Ambrieal Kanahele of the Kekaha Titans, Kody Erdmann of the Hanapepe Colts and Naia Gordon-Medeiros of the Kapa‘a Eagles.

“These scholar athletes are among the top 1.5% in academic performance for all Pop Warner football participants nationwide,” said Agena. “They are an example to their fellow teammates during the school year with practice, games, school activities and family activities and still able to maintain a high level of scholastic achievement.”

Agena said all of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner student athletes are required to maintain a 2.0 GPA to participate.

“This helps our athletes get ready for high-school athletics because the same minimum GPA applies,” Agena said. “This stresses the importance of performing in the classroom as well as on the field. This mindset, we hope, will carry them into high school, college and beyond.”

All of the student-athlete nominees were celebrated earlier in the season during a scholar banquet, and during the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Jamboree that opened the KPWFL 2020 season.
