KAPA‘A — A new design for the Kapa‘a skate park is on the horizon, and public input is being collected to figure out what exactly the community would like to shred their wheels on next.
The county’s Department of Parks and Recreation is working with Bow Engineering and Development, Inc. and American Ramp Company on the redesign.
The skatepark, located at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, will occupy the same 6,000 square foot space and retain its raised obstacles, but input is sought for areas of improvement and renovation.
Samuel Beardsley was at the park Monday afternoon. He said the Kapa‘a skate park is in need of a revamp. And Jodie MacDonald agreed, “It’s not safe, it’s all cracked.”
Survey question range from skill level to describing your perfect skatepark: plaza with typical street terrain, transition features, combination or street course with common elements like funboxes and grind rails. The survey continues to ask, in detail, specific features that could be added into the skatepark.
“Skateboarding is near and dear to me, and providing improvements to this type of recreation for our community further encourages physical activity and provides an improved skateboarding experience for all users,” Mayor Derek Kawakami said in a press release.
Bow Engineering and Development, Inc., based in Honolulu, is working through the standards, regulations and review process, while Pivot Custom, a specialty division of ARC will provide the community with some skate park design solutions using public input.
“Pivot plans to bring the same quality work to the town of Kapa‘a by working the local skate scene to deliver a world class skate park that everybody will be proud of,” a press release said.
