Red Raiders FFA get top Floriculture honor at state convention

HONOLULU — The Kaua‘i High School Future Farmers of America contingent fared well during the Hawai‘i Future Farmers of America State Conference that was held at Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu on March 31, 2023.

Ken Kajihara, who advised The Garden Island on Carmila Udarbe receiving the state FFA degree, said Kaua‘i High School FFA students “did very well in Career Development events.” They earned third place in Vegetable Judging, with Kayla Rivera and Olivia Bukoski participating in the competition that involved students following grading rubrics for tomatoes and cucumbers to determine if the produce were A, B, or Off-grade in quality. This is done visually because the students are not allowed to touch or measure the produce.

The Red Raiders team of Kayla Rivera, Ke Ahe Domingcil, Zariah Bukoski and Chloe Kealoha earned first place in Floriculture, a national event that requires scientific and practical knowledge in plant identification, propagation and preparation of floral products.

The students were coached by Kaua‘i High School agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor Christina Martiney.
