Rookies, Kawaihau are 3-0

PUHI — The Rookies capitalized on a four-run fourth inning to break a 5-5 stalemate against the ‘Ohana Rebels, Saturday during the Kaua‘i Senior Softball contest at the Puhi Park that was ringed with umbrellas and tents to shelter the audience from the remnants of the nearly-constant overnight rains.

Lambert Alapai, the ‘Ohana Rebels’ starting pitcher, cranked into an RBI sacrifice fly to wrap up a two-run fifth frame only to have the Rookies’ starting pitcher Sol Wong hit into an RBI, and Dean Nonaka conking a sacrifice fly to score Rodney Pimental to wrap up a two-run seventh frame, 13-9 in favor of the Rookies.

Russell McCluskey answered in the home half with a double, but the effort fell short as play was stopped before the final ‘Ohana Rebels’ runs scored, according to league coordinator Michael Curtis and the contest’s official scorekeeper Alan Horikawa.

The Rookies’ victory gives them a 3-0 lead in the standings as the weather played havoc with the schedule after four games were rained out, and two contests were moved to the Kaumakani Park where the Bartek shut down West Kaua‘i, 14-0, and Kawaihau shut down Kuku’s Aces, 14-0 for Kawaihau’s 3-0 standings.

This Saturday’s schedule moves to the Kaumakani Park for four games, and the Peter Rayno Park in Hanamaulu for three games, and one rain make-up contest featuring ‘Ohana and Solid Steel playing double-headers.
