Seedlings ready for Saturday distribution

‘ELE‘ELE — The seedlings produced by ‘Ele‘ele Elementary School student Carmila Udarbe and mentor Basilio “Coach Bunga” Fuertes are ready to be distributed Saturday.

Udarbe, Fuertes, and Roy Miyashiro will be available near the entrance of the Gather Federal Credit Union starting at 8 a.m., Saturday at the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center to distribute the variety of seedlings.

Seedlings that are available include the University of Hawai‘i green eggplant, the UH Nitta variety of purple, long eggplant, kale, Waimanalo low-bearing papaya, the Harada sweet green pepper, Hawaiian hot chili pepper, wild spinach, Filipino long beans, and a green leaf onion.

Proceeds from the distribution go toward ensuring future distributions of the popular event with the surplus being set aside for Udarbe’s college fund.

The program started as a student-mentor collaboration between Udarbe who is an avid community basketball participant, and Fuertes who is Udarbe’s tutor and now mentor following Udarbe’s interest in growing things between school and sporting events.
