LIHUE — A short slate of three contests at Isenberg Field closed the 26-game Kauai Senior Softball 60s Division calendar for 2025.
“We now have three weeks to prepare for the State Tournament, both on and off the field,” said JC Crouch, a coordinator for the Kauai Senior Softball league that includes 14 teams from Kauai. “Keep in mind your tournament responsibilities to be sure we are totally prepared on Aug. 4 during the Coaches Meeting. We’re starting early, and we’re using the ball field at Hanapepe Stadium.”
Crouch said the Rookies took a 22-1 victory over Kuku’s Aces on Wednesday to finish atop the standings with a 25-win, 1-loss record.
“The first game at Isenberg on Saturday turned into a nail-biter,” Crouch said. “West Kauai put on a fierce final inning to keep the score close before Makos clinched the win by just two runs. The second game brought another entertaining contest, with Imi‘Ola holding off a determined East Kauai Legends squad for the win, as both teams put runs on the board. The final game featured a solid offensive and defensive effort from Barteks, showing why they will be a force in the tournament by taking down the Hanamaulu Hillsiders.”
Trailing by as much as 10 runs against Imi‘Ola, the EK Legends bats came alive to draw to a 16-15 deficit in the middle innings before Imi‘Ola surged with plates in the final frame for the 5-run margin.
Aided by a grant from AARP, the Kauai Senior Softball league is working with the Department of Parks and Recreation to prepare the fields and facilities for action when the 65-team state tournament opens on Aug. 4. Crouch said plans call for using up to six fields at Hanapepe Stadium, and extra fields including Kalawai Park.
On Friday, Aug. 8, Kauai will also host the first 70s Division (fans call them the “Super Seniors”) tournament at the Rosie Bukoskie Field at the Anne Knudsen Park in Koloa. There are eight teams registered to play over two fields in Koloa.
Kauai has five 60s Division teams, with Ele Makule, as of June 26, topping the standings with 15 wins and no losses. The Koloa Cane Cutters follow with eight wins and seven losses. The Ahukini Wharf Rats are 6-6, followed by Na Koa Kupuna at 4-9. Tsunami rounds out the standings, 1-12.
“The Super Seniors have chosen to end their season early to focus on the State Tournament for those playing in August,” Crouch said. “Congratulations to Ele Makule for another undefeated Championship Season — 49 wins, 0 losses for three years!”
