LIHU‘E — Small pieces, like small works, were the big winners at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists 2020 small work Big Show exhibition now on display at the KSA gallery at Kukui Grove Center.
“The judges, Angela Headley and Cynthia Riedel, are both artists,” said RoseAnne Jones, show chair. “As artists themselves, they appreciate the pain and effort that went into the small pieces that ended up winning the two top awards for the show.”
David Dinner’s “Snow Blind” captured the KSA Award and its accompanying cash prize, the show’s top prize.
Liedeke Bulder’s “Source” was announced the winner of the Board of Directors Award and its cash purse.
The Zeidner family sponsored the Ho‘oulu ‘Aina Award that went to Joshua Huntoon for his “Silver Moonlight.”
Kaua‘i Lava sponsored the Emerging Artist Award that went to Natalie Segal with her “Hanalei Dreamin’” piece.
“I’ve never won anything like this before,” said Segal, who has been painting for three years. “I don’t know what to do with this. This is exciting.”
Segal, who likes to paint backgrounds using watercolor with alcohol and acrylics, said she was encouraged to enter the competition by a friend.
Jones said the winner of the Elinore &Jesse Solomon Memorial Award with Eve Solomon had already been sold, and because the current show is a cash-and-carry event, Carol Mecklin’s ‘Whale Tale” has already gone to its new home.
Shannon Hiramoto’s “Lovely” earned The Art Shop Materials Award, and Licia McDonald’s “Bottles” won honorable mention at the exhibit that is open through Jan. 8, 2021.
The show will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as well as New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Otherwise, the show is available for viewing from noon to 4 p.m., with special Friday night hours of noon to 7 p.m.
The KSA is a nonprofit visual-arts organization that has provided exhibition and educational opportunities to Kaua‘i artists, residents and visitors since 1983. It is supported in part by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and Arts and Kukui Grove Center.
