PUHI — When the doors to the Souper Bowl Sunday event opened, there were just a handful of bowls remaining at Clayworks at Kilohana.
“We came in early,” said Elizabeth Mares, who looked for her hand-painted bowl. “This year, we came in early so we could paint our bowls.”
Mares and Cheryl Brady opted to paint designs on their bowl selections ahead of the National Football League Super Bowl that coincided with the Clayworks’ Souper Bowl fundraising event.
“I came in early because of the selection,” said Carol Ayson, who was picking up her order to go and admirining the handiwork of Mares and her friends. “I didn’t get any of the chopstick variety this year. I got four bowls this time — one is going to Florida, one is going to Minneapolis, and two are staying here on Kauai.”
Ayson said she has accumulated 19 bowls over the years.
“I give them away,” she said. “I’ve been coming here so often Susan knows me by my first name. I wait for this event every year. I don’t really care for the game, but this is an event.”
Sharron Weber of Tire Warehouse said she went to church Saturday night so she wouldn’t miss out on the Souper Bowl event.
“My friends wanted me to go to church with them,” Weber said while waiting on her three to-go orders. “I went to church Saturday night. Now, it’s off to see the Chinese lion.”
Susan Pittman of Clayworks said she estimates that about $3,570 was raised for the Mobile Munchies program at Lihue Lutheran Church that provides brown-bag snacks to folks across the island on a weekly basis.
“We have more than 119 orders right now,” Pittman said Sunday morning. “We can serve up to 130 orders. We still have the days ahead where people can still come in and get some bowls without the soup.”
