Southwest Airlines confirmed Saturday that it will begin flights to Hilo.
The airline did not say when flights to Hilo International Airport would begin.
“Big news for the Island of Hawaii!” the airline wrote on Twitter. “We’re excited to announce that Hilo will be the fifth airport served by Southwest in the Hawaiian Islands.
“We’ll let you know when our low fares and interisland flights for Hilo are available for purchase.”
Mayor Harry Kim said Friday during a public meeting that Southwest would start four daily interisland flights to Hilo in the fall plus flights to the “West Coast” by “the holidays.”
Interisland flights to Kona begin today.
