HONOLULU — The Kaua‘i Special Olympics delegation finished the State Summer Games with a pile of hardware over the weekend at the T.C. Ching Field at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
The Kaua‘i delegation, including teams from the Kaua‘i Storm, Kaua‘i Lanakila and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, pulled in a total of 35 gold medals, 25 silver, 10 bronze, and 12 ribbons under the hot Manoa sun.
“Two years following the last state games, our Special Olympics Kaua‘i athletes finally returned to the State Summer Games,” said Leona Sa McDermott of the Kaua‘i Special Olympics coaching staff. “The feeling and excitement in every athlete shone throughout the past weekend. The athletes were just so happy that they could return to play despite the adjustments and challenges over the past two years.”
One of the adjustments needed to have every athlete, coach, and chaperon test negative for COVID-19 before boarding the flight to O‘ahu.
“The drive and determination of being brave in all of their attempts inspire us as coaches to continue to give them the opportunity to be their best, on and off the field,” Sa McDermott said.
