Police officer arrested on drug, conspiracy charges
WAILUKU, Maui — A Maui police officer was arrested for drug-related offenses and conspiracy, officials said.
Daniel Imakyure, 39, was arrested and released Friday.
The Maui Police Department officer was arrested on offenses including promoting a dangerous drug in the first degree, criminal conspiracy, criminal attempt and attempting to aid another, authorities said.
Imakyure had not been charged as of Saturday, officials said.
Imakyure was released pending further investigation and placed on administrative leave with pay, but with his police powers removed, said Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu in a video statement.
“I want to reassure the public that any wrongdoing by any of my officers will not be tolerated,” Faaumu said. “Any Maui Police Department employee that violates the law will be held accountable both criminally and internally.”
Imakyure has served with the police department headquartered in Wailuku since 2009.
The police Criminal Investigation Division received information earlier this year suggesting an officer was connected to drug-related activity on Molokai.
Maui detectives executed search warrants for cellphones, computers and lockers, leading to Imakyure’s arrest, police said.
“The investigation is ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, we will present our evidence in court,” Faaumu said. “We will not present our case on television, in print or on social media.”
Mother given 6 months for crash that injured children
WAILUKU, Maui — A Maui woman was sentenced to six months in jail for a drunken driving accident that seriously injured two of her children.
Jaydean Forlines, 33, of Haiku was sentenced Thursday for the September 2017 accident on Maui.
Forlines was under the influence while traveling at speeds near 100 mph with her four children before hitting a utility pole at 10:45 p.m., authorities said.
Forlines pleaded no contest to first-degree negligent injury, second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and DUI. Other charges were dismissed in a plea agreement.
Her 10-year-old daughter suffered a broken spine, nasal fracture and fractured arm, while her 12-year-old daughter suffered injuries including a torn artery in her abdomen and a cervical spine fracture, said Deputy Prosecutor Brandon Segal.
“A 9-year-old boy and 18-month-old baby miraculously escaped without any major injuries but were terrified,” Segal said. “These children had almost been killed by their mother.”
Forlines suffered a broken jaw, broken hip and shattered eye socket. She was also ordered to perform 500 hours of community service with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and pay $522 in restitution.
Defense attorney Wendy Hudson asked for a jail sentence less than the year requested by the prosecution.
Forlines completed treatment at a recovery center, participated in a drug court program, attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and the state reunited her with the children, Hudson said.
“Every day she looks at her children, and she’s grateful they’re here,” Hudson said. “Every day she lives with the guilt and what she’s done. She gets it.”
