Structure fire at monastery causes $340,000 in damages

WAILUA HOMESTEADS — Firefighters extinguished a structure fire in Wailua Homesteads Thursday evening. No injuries were reported, and damages to the structure and contents are estimated at $340,000.

According to a preliminary report, Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to the Kaua‘i Hindu Monastery on Kaholalele Road at approximately 8 p.m.

Personnel from the Lihu‘e, Kapa‘a and Kaiakea stations, rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e station, Fire Prevention Bureau and a battalion chief responded. Upon arrival at approximately 8:15 p.m., fire personnel discovered a structure fully engulfed in flames. After establishing a water supply via a hydrant, firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and assisted with shutting off the building’s utilities.

After the fire was extinguished, a KFD investigation ensued.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
