The art of learning

LIHUE — There is no substitute for the real thing, said Penny Nichols during a field trip by Island School art class students to the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center Wednesday.

“It’s like music,” said Nichols, the art instructor for Island School and a participating KSA artist. “You can listen to recordings, but hearing the music live is an experience.”

The dozen or so students were like horses tugging at their bridles, eager to check out the more than 70 pieces on exhibit as the KSA 2019 Art Kauai.

“I wanted the students to be exposed to art,” Nichols said. “I wanted them to see original work, especially from local Kauai artists. A lot of these students never think of coming into the gallery to view the art offerings.”

The unbridled energy was kept in check by the form which contained three lines, representing each student’s perception on at least three pieces that appealed to them, including the basic “What made you stop to look at this piece?”

Robb Jones’ “Chicken Plucker” grabbed a lot of attention due to its sense-of-humor approach to a common theme, the feral chickens, and Stephen Lucas’ “Tinker Thinker” pulled a crowd because of its promotional video that was followed by hands-on experience of Lucas’ “invention” that he will have Saturday when the shopping center opens to the career expo.

“Would you buy this?” Nichols asked students eyeing the “Woman Warrior with Beastie.” “I would buy this. I don’t know what I would do with it, but I would buy this. I know who created this, and she painted the piece rather than using glazes,” said Nichols.

The 2019 Art Kauai show is open daily from noon to 6 p.m., with Friday hours from noon to 9 p.m. through Oct. 25.
