Five Kauai Retired and Senior Volunteer Program volunteers were celebrated as Gold Volunteers for their individual efforts at helping the community on Thursday during the annual 9/11 Day of Service event that was held at the Kukui Grove Center.
The event was presented by the Kauai RSVP with support from the County of Kauai, the Agency for Elderly Affairs, and others.
“In Hawaii, service can take many forms, including the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, by mentoring youth, supporting food security, aiding in disaster preparedness, and comforting kupuna,” said Gov. Josh Green in his message that was delivered by the governor’s Kauai liaison Dana Hazelton. “Today, we recognize five extraordinary individuals who have achieved the special distinction of giving more than 500 hours of RSVP service in the past year. To Nancy Abreu, Lorie Davey, Alan Momohara, Gwen Saiki and Judith Stricker, I thank you for your dedication to aid those in need.”
Others who were recognized and appreciated for the work done with community volunteers included the U.S. Navy at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, the U.S. Coast Guard — who sent representation despite being involved with the Kauai Police Department in a multi-agency search for a missing man — the Kauai Police Department, the Kauai Fire Department, and American Medical Response as well as nurses from the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
“The National Day of Service and Remembrance was established to affirm acts of bravery, kindness, courage and service, which will always triumph over acts of cowardice and terror,” Green said. “It is these principles to which we rededicate ourselves today, and every day. I extend my congratulations to the five Gold Volunteers, and I encourage each of us to emulate their example of selflessness to aid those less fortunate.”
The governor was joined by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, Council Chair Mel Rapozo and a majority of the Kauai County Council, in congratulating and acknowledging the work done by the volunteers that ranged from taking care of sea life, guiding museum tours, delivering food to home-bound residents, and tax preparation.
The event where the Waimea High School JROTC Color Guard introduced the America 250 flag was an opportune chance for numerous community building resources to add their congratulations and appreciation for the Kauai RSVP work.
