LIHUE – Police responded to a single-vehicle crash late Sunday night on Hulemalu Road, just east of the Haiku Road intersection.
On Sunday at approximately 11:30 p.m., a 2015 white Nissan multi-purpose vehicle with four occupants was traveling eastbound on Hulemalu Road when the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a large tree.
Two passengers sustained critical injuries and were transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where they remained in critical condition. The driver, a minor, and another passenger were treated for injuries and later released from Wilcox Medical Center.
In accordance with juvenile privacy laws, the identities of minors will not be disclosed.
Hulemalu Road was closed in both directions for approximately two and a half hours as the Kauai Police Departments Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, and toxicology results are pending to determine whether impairment played a role.
The investigation remains ongoing.
