UH looks to hold additional hearings on Maunakea rules

The University of Hawaii is requesting a second round of public hearings be held for its draft Maunakea administrative rules after making revisions.

UH’s Board of Regents will consider the request at its Thursday meeting at Leeward Community College.

The rules address management of public and commercial activities on UH-managed lands on the mountain.

Public hearings were held on the initial draft in September 2018 on Hawaii Island, Maui and Oahu.

A revised draft was prepared based on concerns.

Among the issues addressed in the revised draft were concerns regarding Native Hawaiian traditional and customary rights, limits on the use of cell phones and flashlights, permit requirements for large groups and public assemblies, and allowing only four-wheel drive vehicles above Halepohaku, the mid-level facility.

The new hearings would also be in Hilo and Waikoloa on
Hawaii Island; in Kahului on Maui and in Honolulu.
