Virtual college fair is Saturday

HONOLULU — The Hawai’i Association for College Admission Counseling, a nonprofit run entirely by volunteers, is hosting a free virtual college fair Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The free HACAC virtual college fair is an excellent opportunity for people to begin exploring college and to learn more about available options,” said James Farris, volunteer president of HACAC.

“My day job is that I am a counselor at a high school on O‘ahu, Assets School. In a typical year, HACAC coordinates neighborhood island college fairs. This year, for obvious reasons, we are doing things differently.

“I want to help make sure students on the neighbor islands have access to college.” The fair is free and open to the public,” said Farris.

Starting at 10:30 a.m., HACAC is offering general information sessions on topics such as the changing landscape of college admissions, timelines for high-school students, college essay writing, financial aid and scholarship access.

The fair will also cover the popular Western Undergraduate Exchange programs offered to Hawai‘i residents, wherein in-state tuition is charged for students in the WUE network.

From 1 to 4 p.m., some 150 colleges and universities will be presenting information about their educational programs, residential life and admissions process through live, virtual, webinar-style sessions. Each session will have six institutions present for six minutes, followed by question-and-answer sessions.

Registration is free and available to all Hawai‘i students and families. To register, go to strivescan.com/hawaii.
