NAWILIWILI — The Island School girls paddling teams — junior varsity and varsity — opened the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation outrigger paddling season on winning notes, Saturday during the long distance regatta at the mouth of the Hulei‘a River at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor.
The Voyager varsity girls set the pace for the day by crossing the 4-mile course at 27 minutes, 20 seconds, followed by the Warrior ladies coming across at 27:52.
The JV Voyager women tripped the race clocks at 13:58, nearly a minute ahead of the Kapa‘a A team that finished at 14:56, just a second faster than the JV Waimea A team that snaked across at 14:57.
The Kapa‘a Warrior mixed teams — both the JV, and Varsity — duplicated the dual-win honor in the Mixed division races with the JV Warriors’ B team crossing the 2-mile finish with an elapsed time of 13 minutes, 53 seconds, and the Varsity Warrior Mixed taking the 4-mile course on a 24:50 paddle, just nine ticks ahead of the challenging Voyager team who tripped the clocks at 24:59.
In the swing boys varsity races, Kapa‘a Warriors took a solid win on a 24:50 paddle over 4 miles, followed nine seconds back by the Voyager men, who clocked 24:50.
