Voyagers extend winning streak in KIF boys volleyball

KAPA‘A —Despite challenges from the Menehune and the Red Raiders, the Voyagers continue to protect its undefeated status following the results of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball matches on Friday.

The contests were waged at Clem Gomes Gym, as the Voyagers traveled to meet the Menehune, and at Bernice Hundley Gym where the Warriors hosted the Raiders.

With a week remaining on the KIF boys volleyball season, the Voyagers kept its undefeated status blemish-free after downing Waimea in straight sets 25-22, 25-17 and 25-15.

On the junior varsity courts, the Menehune needed three sets to get past Island School 25-9, 23-25 and 15-5.

Over at the Bernice Hundley, the JV Warriors settled their claim in two sets 25-22 and 25-18.

On the varsity level, Kapa‘a stayed in control and survived a third set scare from Kaua‘i to claim the evening on scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-22.

After controlling the first two sets on the shoulders of the Kapa‘a traditional starters like Kyle Baunsit, Filisi Hunt, Napela Mokuahi and Austin Green, Kapa‘a Coach Kapule Kaona started injecting his less-experienced players into the third set fray.

A Green whack knotted the set at 5-5 before Kaua‘i pulled ahead on two points served up by Kaina Andrade before a Raider service error stopped progress at 8-7.

A Kaua‘i block pulled the Raiders up by a pair, and a whack by Raider Dylan Takata had the visitors in command 15-13 before Kapa‘a’s Emry Piturachsatit’s hit and an ace knotted the contest at 16-16.

When the Raiders hit the 20-point mark, Coach Kaona reinjected his starters that went on to close the game when Baunset served up a string of four uncontested points that was spiced by Hunt hammers.

The next KIF boys volleyball matches take place on Tuesday when the Warriors make the journey to Clem Gomes Gym to face Waimea High School. In town, the Red Raiders travel to Wilcox Gymnasium to face the league-leading Voyagers.
