Voyagers split in Puhi weather

PUHI — Kapaa High School girls tennis took its series 5-1 over hosting Island School Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis matches at Kauai Community College.

The series concluded with two matches to be determined after play was suspended due to darkness.

The Voyager men were up with three victories before play ended with two matches in progress. A pair of matches were in the midst of competition before the games were suspended. The Voyagers’ Thomas Capelli in the Boys Second Singles, received a duece service from Kapaa’s Patrick McKenna.

Prior to the duece, Capelli had taken the first match, 6-4 and was deadlocked at 2-2 before play was called.

On the Boys Third Doubles court, the Voyagers’ duo of Canaan Washburn and Braydon King were starting play on its second set against Kapaa’s Kamani Dryer and Carlos Ygov-Tapia after falling 4-6 to the Warriors.

Earlier, Island School’s Sasha Rovinsky was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Kapaa’s Mason Buick on the Boys First Singles court, and on the Boys First Doubles floor, Island School’s pair of Foster McLychok and Max McLychok were 6-4, 6-2 winners over the Warrior duo of Ian Sotelo and Michael Amoyo.

Voyager Zachary Davis paired with Andrew Sclafani to take the Kapaa pair of Glen Aguada and Chazer Agbayani, 6-3, 6-4 on the Boys Second Doubles arena.

Haven Sadler was the sole Voyager female to claim victory after defeating Kapaa’s Sydney Nice, 6-4, 6-3 on the Girls First Singles court where play was suspended multiple times due to passing showers and wind.

Kapaa’s Kiarra Dolino was a 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 winner over Island School’s Bonnie Lee on the Girls Second Singles floor.

Host Island School dropped all three of its doubles play, starting with Kalia Hamid and Samantha Brown falling 0-6, 2-6 to Kapaa’s Wailana Makepa and MJ Uribe on the Girls First Doubles court.

Kapaa’s Hannah Collins-Doijode paired with Leila Nelson to defeat the Island School pair of Ava Anderton and Paulina Do, 6-0, 6-1 on the Girls Second Doubles floor, and in the final competitive match, Kapaa’s pair iof Analani Bacon and Ruby Udaundo were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Voyagers Giana Detrolio and Melina Ventura on the Girls Third Doubles court.

No time for the matches-in-play were available at press time.

The Island School team hosts Waimea, Saturday when the first service goes off at 1 p.m. at KCC.
