Wahine prepares for conference-opener against CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, California — The Hawai’i women’s basketball team hasn’t played a conference or non-conference game since they defeated the University of Hawai’i- Hilo 71-54 on December 20.

The Wahine basketball team has struggled to get games in because of the travel restrictions related to COVID-19 and has played a total of two games.

The two games Hawai’i has played produced mixed results.

The Wahine split two non-conference games to NCAA Division II opponents, defeating Hilo 71-54 and falling to Hawai’i Pacific in the season opener 82-74.

The Wahine is scheduled to play its first series of Big West Conference basketball when they travel to CSU-Bakersfield Friday and Saturday night.

The Wahine will have a difficult task shutting down the Roadrunners’ dynamic offensive weapons.

Bakersfield, who defeated Fresno State 81-69, was able to distribute the basketball well, and they had four players score in double figures, including Lexus Green who led the Runners with a total of 14 points.

Bakersfield has struggled in Big West action as they were swept by Long Beach State in their conference play.

The Runners will have the edge in games played, and conference games played over the young Wahine team, who enter the contest without any conference experience headed into 2021.

Hawai’i is led by freshman guard Daejah Phillips, who leads the ‘Bows in scoring by averaging 16.5 points per game going into the Mustangs contest.

In the game against the University of Hawai’i-Hilo, Phillips led the Wahine again with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
