Wailua fire displaces two

WAILUA HOMESTEADS — Firefighters extinguished a house fire on Olohena Road in Wailua Homesteads on Friday, leaving two residents displaced.

The couple was not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

According to a preliminary report, firefighters were dispatched to the two-story home at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Personnel from the Lihu‘e, Kaiakea and Kapa‘a fire stations responded along with KFD’s Rescue 3, the on-duty battalion chief and inspectors from the Kaua‘i Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau, according to a county press release.

Officers from the Kauai Police Department, American Medical Response medics and a crew from the county Department of Public Works also responded to the scene.

Firefighters continued their efforts until shortly after 6 p.m.

The home is considered a total loss, and damages to the structure and contents are estimated to be approximately $880,000.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced couple.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
