The Wailua River is rising rapidly due to flash-flood conditions.
The Kaua‘i Police Department advises homeowners in the area to be mindful of the river and be prepared for potential evacuation. Officials ask the public to avoid being on the roads and, if possible, to stay in place.
Flooding from the Wailua River affected several businesses Friday evening, including the Hoomana Thrift Shop. Officials monitored the Wailua River and Kuhio Highway closed Friday in the vicinity of Hanalei Bridge as flash flooding caused waters to rise.
As of 5 p.m. on Friday, the Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kauai was extended to 7 p.m. and shelters opened at Hala Halawai in Hanalei and Kapaa Middle School. County officials advise driving with extreme caution as ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions are expected due to the heavy rains.
